Ring Out Wild Bells

One of the gloomiest hymns ever written has to be "Ring Out Wild Bells." You would think a hymn compilation of Mozart and Tennyson would be more beautiful and touching. But instead, it is just truly awful!

It was actually written by Tennyson lamenting his son serving in the Civil War over the Christmas holiday. While writing the poem, he looked up and saw his son's regiment (son intact), marching home, thus the last song of the hymn is about renewed faith in the world. It's much easier to appreciate the song knowing its history.
