My professional career has lead me through an exciting and challenging journey through event planning, marketing, and social media marketing. Over the years I have worked hard to earn a living as a writer in my free time as well.
In 2010, after getting laid off by 3 companies in a row, I decided to stop relying on others for employment and start "employing" myself with new projects. Throughout 2011 career opportunities changed a lot for me. I went from consulting about social media marketing, to trying something new with social media. One of my passions is finding new applications and uses for social media (other than just talking to your friends). For a while I freelanced using social media to recruit IT professionals. It was a fun and different use of my social media and marketing skills. I really enjoyed helping other people find gainful employment.
But life around here never stays the same for long. In November 2011, I decided it was time to really follow my dream of being a full-time writer. I have done a lot of freelance writing over the years, but it was finally time to make it a real career. Just six months later, I cannot believe how happy I am in this career, and how quickly it has become successful and profitable.
I am now a paid blogger for the Motley Fool, where I write about investing and the stock market. Becoming a professional writer means daily opportunities to learn about new subjects, and having to quickly become an expert on new subjects, which is my favorite part. I am also the daily associate editor for Meridian Magazine. For about ten years I have been a columnist for them, and now I am both writing, and helping with the daily publication. My past writing experience also includes one published novel, Beyond Perfection. I've also contributed to other books along the way. When I find some free time between the jobs that pay the bills, I am working on a new fiction series which I hope to complete by the end of May 2012. As soon as that project finishes, I hope to begin work on my first non-fiction project. In the meantime, I enjoy blogging as the Swing State Voter about politics. I never expected that blog to take off and become as highly read as it is. But I'm not complaining!
The world of writing has changed considerably in the past few years, due in large part to social media. To be a successful writer, you also have to be able to promote yourself with social media marketing techniques. I'm blessed to have a good solid background in both areas.
Here are a few of the articles I have written to help others learn and understand the benefits of social media marketing-
